But you have there the myth of the essential white America. All the other stuff, the love, the democracy, the floundering lust, is a sort of by-play. The essential American soul is hard, isolate and a killer. It has never yet melted. (D.H. Lawrence, English novelist and author of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, 1885-1930)
Dunning-Kruger Effect Run Amok
For chrissakes is the entire country mentally defective! Is the entire planet? Yeah, it’s time, maybe way overdue, to put the metaphorical “Gone Fishing” sign on the front door, at least for a short while.
The journey it seems to me needs a reset as delusion, conspiracy nonsense and a kind of sickening denial and numbing ignorance settles in across the globe liked a backed-up sewer system while, at the same time, rising global heat, what we used to call climate change so as not to upset delicate souls, especially those that can’t fathom change or, er, those various “economic interests,” promises a terrible comeuppance for Homo sapiens … and for that matter all life that doesn’t even use fossil fuels, drive cars or mow ornamental, drug addicted lawns.
I’ve written about Dunning-Kruger in past posts because it seems to me to capture human bewilderment so well. See: Republicans Are Literally Too Stupid to Debate (video)
and Dietrich Bonhoeffer explained how stupidity enables MAGA

Think Good Thoughts
Of course it’s more than individual stupidity that threatens our very existence … but dumb—in the broadest sense—plays its part. And all sides of course tend to continually do the same thing but expect different outcomes. Dear liberal stop believing that it’s merely a matter of more “facts” that will turn the trick.
No, your yoga instructor most likely doesn’t know more than an experienced epidemiologist about infectious diseases but if they do let us know right away. Think about the term “alternative” news and why you believe it’s where the truth is found.
In the meantime I’m going fishing, but I still want to know where the American government is hiding those alien spaceships and, yuck, the alien body parts. We know this is true because some “expert” this past week told a Republican led House congressional hearing that THEY are among us. Be vigilant. I’m going to see the movie Barbie.
AND FINALLY, A CODA THAT SEARS MY SOUL:
They Squealed As They Died. I Tried to Help Those Baby Pilot Whales
My book club read 2 dystopian near future novels this year! And perhaps because it is the question I keep asking myself, they both had a theme of "what should we do?". Answers range from hunker down, survive somehow, build a small supportive community, escape - but where to?, go underground and be subservive - but at what cost to yourself and your loved ones.
I'm curious enough about how the human race deals with this that I want to stick around a bit. I think it could go either way. We, as a species, might wake up simply put of a need to survive. We might not. Fishing, at least metaphorically might not be a bad solution. I plan to enjoy life the best I can. Be supportive and kind to others as well as I can and see where it goes.
