Do They Complement: Seeing and Understanding

Jane and friend

A Seductive Android That Is Right For You

It is increasingly difficult to avoid the news regarding Artificial Intelligence, especially when listening to the constant tech-bro hustle about AI and, yes, the new Silicon Valley Christianity with its talk of the coming of the Antichrist.

Oh yes, it’s true and dovetails nicely with the gibberish and bottomless corruption coming out of the Trump administration regarding something as significant as Artificial Intelligence and its potential impact on humanity. Life is but a cabaret my friend.

I recently watched Trump at a news conference of sorts attempting to pronounce the word “acetaminophen.” He had little apparent understanding about what he was saying regarding autism and Tylenol, but couldn’t one of his handlers at least have told him how to pronounce acetaminophen beforehand, I wondered.

Yet, much of corporate America and clearly the Republican congress, remain terrified of this vulgar putz, and a significant portion of the citizenry think it’s all fine and dandy that our republic is being dismantled. Seeing, of course, does not automatically indicate understanding.

I contain multitudes. (Walt Whitman, American poet, 19th century)

An interesting article I read is entitled AI Is Turning You Basic. The gist of the piece asks the question is AI just making us boring, both collectively and individually. As it’s presently constituted, does AI actually narrow people’s choice, perhaps increasing banality and downplaying uniqueness. Could it end up choosing for us and not merely suggesting? Think about it. It would be an autocrat’s delight virtually anywhere … at least initially.

A Darkness That Haunts Us Still

AI has seemingly helped uncover who actually murdered a Jewish civilian in Ukraine and determined it took place on July 28, 1941. Mobile SS units called Einsatzgruppen entered captured territory after the Germany army had taken control. They were responsible for hunting down partisans and murdering Jews.

Many of these SS troops enjoyed taking photographs of their atrocities and sending them back home. After all, Hitler’s Third Reich was going to last a thousand years and the family album would tell the story.

Ah, those unremembered photographs we’ve forgotten about, those joyous moments on exclusive islands and mansions in Palm Beach. The claim by many Germans right after the war is that they didn’t know what the Nazis were doing was clearly absurd.

The German SS officer in the photograph that shot this man was a Jakobus Onnen. He joined the Nazi party before Hitler took over in 1934. He came from an educated family and “enjoyed traveling and studying languages” A firm moral compass is not guaranteed regardless of background. Onnen was killed in 1943.

“The Last Jew In Vinnitsa” The identity of the murdered man remains largely unknown

Shall We Overcome

Humans can adapt to endure almost anything, but in doing so, they sometimes perpetuate incredible evil. The death of human empathy is one of the earliest and most telling signs of a culture about to fall into barbarism. (Hannah Arendt)

Life is not that simple. Ur-Fascism can come back under the most innocent of disguises. Our duty is to uncover it and point our finger at any of its new instances—every day, in every part of the world. (Umberto Eco)

It’s bubbling up from below in very worrisome ways, and that’s very much like the original fascisms. It’s the real thing. It really is. (Robert Paxton, American historian, 2024)
