The Paddle Revolution

I didn’t watch live the address to the joint session of Congress this past Tuesday, but I did read a number of articles the following day and watched some of the spectacle that had occurred. Beyond the expected lies and misinformation offered up by the cult leader of the United States and the frightened, lap dog enabling of the Republicans, the Democrats were merely pathetic and virtually irrelevant.

From what I could tell, a number of congressional Democrats appeared to hold up ping-pong paddles with words written on them critical of the performer at the podium, the graceless oaf with the jaundiced complexion, orange hair and dangerously impaired mind.

A number of the congressional Democratic women wore pink outfits, signifying what? Oh yeah, they were protesting. Yes, as many opinion pieces suggested, it was spineless and performative. It all appeared like privileged matrons at the annual garden club meeting upset with the quality of the flowers and the Hord’ Oeuvres.

Get use to it; for the time being the security of democracy and the fight against authoritarianism—with some exceptions—does not reside in the hands of the professional Democrats. We’re on our own and that’s important to understand.

A good beginning is to know your community better, perhaps slightly different from the suggestions you might normally get. Have you ever visited a Ferrari dealership? No, admittedly they are not in many communities. Find an exclusive country club to visit or perhaps an upscale gated community somewhere near you.

If you are on the younger side, locate a debutante party to attend. They actually still exist. If you lean toward business locate a stockholder meeting that interests you. There have been many interesting interactions regarding meetings with stockholders.

I’ve always enjoyed yacht clubs myself. Make your presence known. Use your imagination. People will appreciate your continued and possibly obsessive interest in their activities and hidden life styles. Let them know you truly care. Elon Musk cares about you. Thank him as much as you can.

Not paying one’s fair share of taxes has significant benefits that you ought to know about. Believe it or not there are people rich enough and certainly dumb enough to pay $5 million to have a private chat with the orange glow worm in the White House. What would you ask for?

Senate Republicans are now asking Elon Musk to send his tax cuts to Congress. They’ve “urged” Elon to “better coordinate with them.” The chainsaw approach is making the Republicans nervous, not because they’re unhappy relinquishing legislative responsibility and allowing executive rulings become the “law” of the land, but because they don’t want their voters to get mad at them and lose their sweet sinecures. In addition the Supreme Court has suggested that just maybe the current occupant in the Oval Office may have overstepped his constitutional authority. Imagine that?

This has virtually nothing to do, on the part of the Republicans, to insure the integrity of the Constitution or really maintain the importance of the Legislative Branch of government. As the cliche goes, this is not the Republican party of your grandfather.

Executive orders are not permanent and can be overturned, while passing legislation on the part of Congress and creating a law makes it much more difficult to change. The Republicans want Musk to send a package of proposed spending clawbacks, known as rescissions.

These spineless sycophants want to gut the government as much as Musk and Trump do and privatize every damn thing they can get away with. Along the way they want more and more tax cuts for those that need them the least.

What do you really think will be there afterwards, you know, for that working man, the salt of the earth, the people that make America function, the lunch bucket provider, those everyday folks, blah, blah ... and the cost of those bananas and eggs, huh?

The Hope

Yesterday I attended a large protest in Kansas City. More than a thousand people showed up. This was not a protest organized weeks in advance and well advertised. It was, however, a diverse group of regular people fed up with the rising tide of incompetence, lawlessness, authoritarianism, greed and outright criminality on the part of the Trump administration and its collection of mediocrities, lapdogs and crooks.

People decided that this will not stand. It happened not with the official approval of any political party or any professional politician but because people are simply fed up. Get out of the way. This country will not be the playground for any oligarch. Yes the stakes are high and it remains to be seen what happens next across the country. But, DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT.
