The Occurrence
Most of the time things simply occur, happen or unfold. But when something unfolds that is contrary to expectations, this is when we humans tend to feel the discomfort or perhaps the unease. When things don’t make sense we often feel disoriented and unnerved. Of what use is this worth knowing you might ask. I would say a great deal because it does help explain so much about our beliefs and our actions and the situations we find ourselves in.
How do we go about coping with uncertainty? How do we avoid being frozen in place? Why do we frequently choose that which is most familiar in difficult situations?
A fascinating short film written and produced by the late film director David Lynch in 2002 is most certainly worth watching. The film is in fact used by some psychologists today. The familiar is placed alongside the unfamiliar and reveals a great deal about all of us at one time or another. Lynch gleefully takes us to the state of confusion. After you watch the film clip, go to the article that explains what is taking place.
